Unions

So I got angry the other day listening to a couple people talking about Unions.  One person was mad because by not being in the union he was had no one to fight for him when he did not get the raise he was promissed.  The other man made a statement about how nobody likes union and went on to say some more harsh words.  While I do understand that unions do have their problems, with power can sometimes come corruption, but on the whole Unions do great things to protect workers.  Despite what you think your boss does not want to pay you what you want, and would like to cut costs anywhere they can.  Working in fields as a laborer the only way to fight the power that the owner has with the $$ is by uniting to fight together.  Many of these fat cats spend so much money fighting unions instead of just providing safe working conditions and fair wages to the people whose work provides him all that money.  Look at our buddy Don Blankenship CEO of Massey Energy.  If he had spent the money to ensure that the safety regulations were followed instead of spending the money to bash unions and pay for his mansion, then maybe so many sons and daughters would have their father coming home from work today.  Our Union does a lot to ensure that we have the best technology, training, and staffing so that we can make it home to our families and provide a living for them.  It doesn’t stop there.  We help out many charities for the widows, people burned, fellow firefighters, children with medical complications(like Jerry’s Kids).  So I know it is easy to bash the Union, “they only look after themselves”, “they prevent the firings of bad people”, “I have to have dues ‘taken’ from my paycheck”.  Just remember all the good they do to protect you, your family, and your co-workers before you start bad mouthing them, especially around a union steward!
